new idea
holographic book - similar to the thin-sheet "digital newspaper" found in many early '00s (and 90s?) movies.
basically two canvus-looking slabs, which, when opened create a hologram between them that looks like pages. Duh, right?
I doubt it'd be plausible in the real world due to limits on optics (idk much about holography), but hey-- u never know.
I think this idea links to my ongoing frustration at the slowness with which machine-human interfaces are developing. There seems to be a limit at how quickly people can uptake info and process it into memory (and action). Tablet reading is alright, but perhaps my admiration for this idea is just borne from nostalgia for my schooldays?
Nah, I think I just miss the old feeling of reading books as a kid, when ideas really could change things and the knowledge of all of humanity was open to free perusal. That feeling of connectedness to exciting things.
Sure this wouldn't bring that back. But it could mix the tactile pleasure of sitting down with a book-- which I like, while eliminating the non-fungibleness that you're locked into THAT BOOK while reading it.
edit: let me be clear. I'm talking about a portable electronic device similar in size to a thin laptop or tablet that, instead of screens, touchscreens, or keyboards, interfaces through
Actually, this probably wouldn't be feasible even if it were theoretically possible, for the simple reason that it'd feel gimmicky to use (no haptic response from the pages). Still, I think it'd be a perfect throw-away idea for the next futuristic blockbuster.
